Sculptor Michael Binkley carved this original fine art stone sculpture of a male nude from a variety of marble that is quarried in Alaska, USA. This unique marble has a beige background colour with striations of caramel, red and white. It is mounted on a base made of black Italian granite.
The figure is a torso with legs to just below the knee. Binkley carved the nude to appear like an antiquity sculpture that had been broken. The figure is seated and is twisting and contorting as if the male was trying to rise from his seated position. The composition shape lead the artist to the title “Curl.”
Since this marble is quite colourful, Binkley chose not to carve too much detail of musculature. Instead, he has highlighted only some muscle and skeletal features, enough to give a sense of a powerful body in motion. Too much detail would fight with the colours of the marble.
Binkley used a smooth, matte finish on the sculpture to give the stone the ability to successfully hold shadow, yet accentuate the wonderful colours of the marble.
