This original white marble sculpture of a female nude was inspired by a black and white photograph of a nude female laying over a decorative ball element on a massive stone wall. Michael Binkley had an onyx sphere, so he sculpted the female figure to lay supine over it. The pose forces the female’s torso to bow, for the rib cage to stretch and the breasts to flatten and sweep to the side. Her long hair pools between her outstretched arms.
“Supine” is carved from statuario marble, which is considered the finest of the varieties of white marble that are quarried in the mountains above the famous town of Carrara, Italy. The nude woman and the sphere are mounted on a black granite base and a hidden steel pin secures all the pieces together. Binkley used a silky smooth matte finish on the white marble, so that shadows can be held most successfully and act as a contrast to the highly polished surface of the onyx ball and the black granite.
This art work has been sold and is in the private collection of a patron in West Vancouver, BC, Canada.
