I was invited to be Artist in Residence at the Kitty Harri Sculpture Garden in Andalusia, Spain for the months of December 2018 and January 2019. The Residency allowed for me to work in studio on local marble and interact with the guests visiting the Garden, showing them stone sculpting techniques and answering their questions. I carved two large sculptures for the Garden’s permanent collection.
Macael Maiden, the first piece I carved, is a female torso inspired by classical statuary with a contraposto stance. I left the surface with a smooth matte finish, so one can see the beautiful markings of the stone and shadows are best held. The stone is a variety of yellow marble that is quarried near Macael, Spain. The stone exhibits interesting patterns left by water penetration, and small cavernous spaces.
The sculpture was installed in a wonderful location of the Garden at the foot of a tall pine and with a backdrop view south of the valley towards the Costa del Sol and the Mediterranean Sea. Macael Maiden will remain in the permanent international art collection of the Garden.
