Michael Binkley has carved this original fine art abstract stone sculpture from white marble quarried at Carrara, Italy. This particular variety of white marble is called statuario, or statuary as is has been coveted by artists for centuries as the finest carving stone in the world fro figurative sculpture. Michelangelo insisted upon using this particular marble for his creations. This is actually an offcut of material that Binkley used for his public art sculptures aboard the Cunard Line Ltd. Queen Mary 2 ocean liner.
This abstract is reminiscent of a cloud and the eye of a hurricane. On the top of the sculpture, a spiral morphs into a navel-like cavity at the sculpture’s centre. There is a change in surface texture from the outside, towards the vortex. The outer, swirling cloud-like surfaces are silky smooth and have a matte finish. As the surfaces converge into the vortex, Binkley has added a fine file texture for contrast. The matte finish of the marble gives the stone the ability to successfully hold dramatic shadows.
Binkley is exploring a common thread between the heart of a storm and the centre of life giving nourishment in the womb.I would like more information about this sculpture
