Michael Binkley has carved this original fine art stone sculpture of a polar bear from white marble that is quarried in Carrara, Italy. There are dozens of varieties of white Carrara marble and this one is called bianco and was quarried high in the mountains above the famous Italian town.
The white marble is accented by a filagree of thin grey striations that let the viewer know the material is made by Mother Nature, and is not man-made. Binkley created the illusion of a thick, shaggy fur coat with the subtle details on the trailing edges of the polar bear’s legs, yet the whole sculpture’s surface is a silky smooth matte finish. The bear has paused as it lumbers across the Arctic tundra, head swung to the right and sniffing the air as if it has caught scent of a seal supper.
The sculpture’s surface is a joy to the touch and also gives the sculpture the ability to hold shadow successfully.I would like more information about this sculpture
