Michael Binkley has carved this stylized original fine art stone owl sculpture from bardiglio marble which is quarried at the famous town of Carrara, Italy. Carrara is known mostly for its white marble, but it also produces this dove grey marble. Binkley mounted the owl on a circular base of highly polished black granite.
The owl is fashioned after a great horned owl, but the composition is elongated and the lines are simplified. The form is symmetrical and likens to ancient Egyptian statuary that was very rigid, but stately. There is a lovely pattern of fine black striations that encircle the owl’s body. Binkley has given the sculpture a silky smooth matte finish which is wonderful to the touch and gives the marble the ability to successfully hold shadow.I would like more information about this sculpture
