Michael Binkley carved this sculpture from white marble from the famous town of Carrara, Italy. This particular marble is from the Petacchi quarries and has a white background colour and striations of lacy grey veining.
Binkley started with a thin, square shaped piece of marble and was inspired to create a composition that had undulating surfaces that got gradually thinner towards the edges. There is a curvilinear aspect to the outside of the sculpture and it looks as though it is made of fabric and blowing in a breeze. The marble is thin enough at the edges to allow light to penetrate through it.
On one side, there appears to be a female abdomen and navel. On the other side is gently rippling surfaces. The sculpture is mounted on a stainless steel pin that is affixed into the elliptical white marble base, but it can move on the pin, or be removed for easy transport. The artist has given the sculpture a silky smooth matte finish which gives the marble the ability to successfully hold shadows and is a contrast to the highly polished base.I would like more information about this sculpture
